An internationally known research engineer, who has specialized in fluid dynamics, and the associate editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics for more than 30 years. Miles was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1920. Biochemist and nutritionist born in 1928 and educated at the California Institute of Technology (B.S. in 1949, Ph. D. in 1953). Saltman taught biochemistry at the University of Southern California from 1953 to 1967, when he accepted a position as Provost of UCSD's Revelle College. In 1972, Saltman was appointed UCSD's Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He resigned from that position in 1980, returning to full-time teaching and research at UCSD.
